The Green Bay Packers have elevated Island Coast graduate Kurt Benkert to the active roster as a COVID-19 replacement for backup quarterback Jordan Love, the team announced Tuesday.

Benkert’s elevation provides the Packers with a suitable backup quarterback option should Love not return to the roster before Sunday’s showdown with the Chicago Bears.

The Packers also signed QB Danny Etling to the practice squad and with Rodgers still nursing a fractured left pinky toe and unlikely to practice this week, Etling gives the Packers another arm to work with as practice this week.

Benkert signed with the Packers in May 2021 and has spent the entire regular season on Green Bay's practice squad although he missed some time on the COVID-19 list earlier this season.

The University of Virginia product was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Atlanta Falcons on May 1, 2018. Benkert spent the 2018 and 2020 seasons on the Falcons' practice squad while spending the 2019 season on injured reserve.
