Paige Bueckers to miss UConn women’s game vs. Georgetown with ankle injury; Anna Makurat out indefinitely

UConn will be short two of its regular rotation players and best passers for Saturday’s conference matchup versus Georgetown.

Freshman point guard Paige Bueckers, who sprained her ankle late in UConn’s game at Tennessee Thursday, will not be available. Nor will sophomore guard Anna Makurat, who has an unspecified lower leg injury and will be out indefinitely, according to the program.

Bueckers returned from spraining her ankle Thursday to hit the dagger in Thursday’s 67-61 win. Makurat did not appear to have an obvious injury that day.

Both players wore boots as they cheered their teammates on from the sidelines during pre-game warm-ups.

Freshman Nika Muhl will make her first career start in place of Bueckers, while Aubrey Griffin earned her third-straight start.

Bueckers, who has started every game of her young career, leads the team in scoring (17.1 points per game), assists (51) and steals (26), as well as minutes (34.9 per game). Makurat has had a bit of a down year so far, averaging just 4.9 points per game, but has logged the fourth-most minutes on the team and has the third-most assists (34).

Without the two guards, UConn will likely lean heavily on its junior pair of Evina Westbrook and Christyn Williams, as well as Muhl, in the backcourt.

Georgetown (1-4, 1-4 Big East) is one of the worst teams in the conference but the Huskies have a big matchup against No. 15 Arkansas looming Thursday.
