Painter Mobile review

Responsive and easy to use, Painter Mobile from Corel enables you to draw on the go whenever inspiration strikes you. That said, this app is still a relatively recent release compared to other drawing apps for Android and can be unstable at times.

Pros

Full-fledged drawing tool: Painter Mobile's pressure sensitivity, support for up to 20 layers, Blender Brushes for naturally blending and mixing colors, and art tools such as charcoals, chalks, and watercolors empower you to create beautiful drafts on the go even without a stylus. Furthermore, creating unique effects is surprisingly easy with the available blenders, and you can even make your own brushes.

High usability: The clean, well-ordered interface with a toolbar to the left of the canvas, a brush or tool customization bar on top, and layers and color options to the right, makes all essential tools readily available. As befits an app of this kind, the UI as a whole is attractive, with a sleek design and self-explanatory icons.

Responsive canvas controls: The two-finger canvas rotation as well as the controls for the brush and other painting tools work with impressive accuracy. The pressure sensitivity works great as well -- you'll notice a great difference in the strength of your lines if you apply pressure on your finger.

Cons

Occasionally unstable: When first launching the app, you're greeted by a pop-up advertising an online drawing contest; but if you click on it to learn more, the app crashes. Expect other crashes every now and then, especially while handling layers.

Minor bugs: A variety of small bugs surface as you use the app, such as misbehaving layers that cause you to lose work in progress or image importing attempts that don't work.

Bottom Line

As far as features and customization options are concerned, Painter Mobile makes a great impression, but because of its crashes and bugs can be frustrating at times. Once the developers sort out the technical issues, this will be an irresistible app for visual artists and graphic designers. Even the current release is a worthwhile download, but only if you can tolerate its quirks.
