Paintsville native wins master gardeners scholarship

Jan. 15—PRESTONSBURG — A student at Big Sandy Community and Technical College has won a $750 scholarship from Boyd County Master Gardeners.

Skylar McCarty of Paintsville, daughter of Ryan and Kimberly McCarty, developed an interest in horticulture and agriculture while a member of Future Farmers of America at Johnson Central High School.

"I was excited — really, really excited," she said of learning she had received the scholarship.

The 19-year-old is in her second year of studies at BSCTC. She said she plans to transfer to a four-year school to complete a degree in early education, with hopes of going into the Head Start program and incorporating programs related to horticulture into her classroom. She also said she looks forward to having her own gardens.

"I'm very thankful for the opportunity to receive the scholarship," McCarty said.

New master gardener classes will begin on Jan. 30. For more information or to register, call the Boyd County Extension Office at (606) 739-5184.
