Pair of champions from MetroWest crowned at MIAA Indoor Track & Field Meet of Champions

The best of the best in the state arrived at Reggie Lewis Center Saturday for the MIAA Indoor Track Meet of Champions. There were some, of course, who shined brightest. A pair from the Daily News area can call themselves All-State champions.

Framingham senior Sam Burgess continued to stake his claim among the greatest distance runners in state history, defending his state title in the 2-mile. He followed his Division 1 meet-record time at last Friday’s Division 1 meet (9:06.34) with an even more impressive time in winning the Meet of Champions (8:59.27). The Harvard-bound Burgess edged out St. John’s Prep senior Nathan Lopez (school record 9:01.32) and Westford Academy junior Paul Bergeron (9:04.08). Wellesley junior Eli Merritt placed 11th in the race (9:29.03).

As was the case in the Division 2 meet last weekend, Hopkinton High senior Sean Golembiewski was well ahead of the field in taking the 55-meter hurdles title. The University of Pennsylvania-bound Golembiewski bested his seeding time of 7.61 with a 7.60 in the final, edging out Lexington’s Jayden Bai by 0.19/second (7.79). Westborough senior Alan Nguyen took fourth in the race (7.88) in addition to second in the long jump (22-06.50). In the long jump, Wellesley senior Tyler Yen placed fifth (21-07.25) while Natick junior Dylan Weddle was 23rd (19-07.25).

Golembiewski also ran anchor for the Hillers’ all-senior 4x400 relay team (3:26.69) that took second place to Newton North (3:24.62). Luke Boothroyd, Paul Litscher and Ruben Noroian ran the first three legs of the relay. The all-senior Franklin team of Luke Sidwell, Joshua Dunlap, Jake Vaccarezza and Trey Lovell took 13th in 3:33.97.

Hopkinton’s Boothroyd, meanwhile, missed out on an all-state championship in the 600 meters by a fraction of a second, with his sprint of 1:23.38 placing just behind Andover senior Neil Chowdhury (1:23.06).

Also a runner-up in close fashion was Wellesley junior Christopher Brooks, who placed second in the 55 meters with a blazing time of 6.46, barely behind Pembroke senior Andrew Gleason (6.45).

Franklin junior Sarah Dumas continued her rewriting of the school’s record books, placing second in the 55-meter hurdles in a new FHS mark of 8.43. Concord-Carlisle junior Obi Akubude won in 8.31. Also for the Panthers, junior Lily DeForge once again broke her own school record in the shot put, tossing it 38 feet, 0.75 inches for a sixth-place finish. Both will compete at next weekend’s New England Championship.

Also in the girls’ shot put, Natick senior Cricket Lemon was ninth (35-00), with Hopkinton junior Loryn Canty taking 12th (34-08) and Natick sophomore Angela Leavey placing 13th (34-08).

Framingham’s Abby Desmarais takes 3rd place in the 4X400 meter relay race with a time of 4:05.81 at the MIAA Meet of Champions at the Reggie Lewis Track Center in Boston on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023.

In the girls 55 meters, Framingham junior Abby Desmarais (7.13) was oh-so-narrowly defeated by first-place winner and Pembroke junior Sarah Claflin (7.12) and Concord-Carlisle sophomore Julienne Warner (7.12) for a third-place finish. Wellesley senior Abigail Lothian took fourth (7.20).
