Pair of overnight crashes leave woman dead, others injured

Two serious crashes on expressways in Cook County in the early hours of Saturday left one woman dead and three other people injured, including a 9-year-old boy, according to Illinois State Police.

Shortly before 3 a.m.Saturday, a driver traveling north in the southbound lanes of Interstate 57 south of 183rd Street hit two other cars, state police said. A 69-year-old woman in one of the vehicles, identified by state police as Mary Williams of University Park, was killed.

The driver, a 33-year-old woman from Chicago, was taken to a hospital, along with a 29-year-old woman in one of the vehicles involved. Both had injuries that were not life-threatening, according to state police. The investigation is ongoing.

About the same time early Saturday, on southbound I-94 at 67th Street, state troopers responded after a driver lost control of her vehicle. Laura Chambers, 27, of Chicago, veered off the expressway, striking a concrete barrier on the right shoulder. A 9-year-old boy in the car was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, state police said.

Chambers was charged with driving under the influence, according to state police.
