Palestinians bury dead on second day of fighting

As dawn breaks, air-raid sirens send Israelis into shelters near the Gaza border.

Israeli airstrikes have killed more than 20 Palestinians in Gaza in two days of intensified violence.

A father and his two sons were among the dead on Wednesday (November 13).

From early morning, Gaza militants fired rockets into Israel. This one was intercepted by Israeli defenses.

Israel's military said strikes took out at least three crews preparing to launch the rockets over the border. Islamic Jihad named two of the dead as members.

The worst fighting in months began on Tuesday (November 12), when Israel killed an Islamic Jihad commander, Abu Al-Atta.

It accused him of masterminding recent attacks on Israel and planning more in future.

That sparked a rain of rockets into Israel throughout the day, which were met with further Israeli air strikes.

There have been reports of light injuries on the Israeli side but no casualties.

Hamas, which rules Gaza, has so far stayed out of this bout of fighting, though it has condemned Israel's actions.

Syrian state media blamed Israel for a separate missile attack on the home of an Islamic Jihad official in Damascus that killed two people, including one of his sons.

Israel did not comment.
