A 44-year-old Palm Bay woman died in a multi-vehicle crash Thursday evening on Interstate 95 about a mile north of the Malabar Road exit, highway troopers said.

The woman was driving a 2017 Chevy Cruze south on I-95 at about 5:49 p.m. near mile marker 174 in the outside lane when she swerved to the left to avoid a 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser, which was stopped for traffic ahead in the same lane, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.

The front right area of her car hit the back of the SUV, causing the Chevy Cruze to turn and the path of a 2013 Ford F-750 with a trailer in the center lane, FHP said. The Ford, driven by a 36-year-old Vero Beach man, hit the left side of the Chevy Cruze, pushing the car off the road and into a guardrail.

The Chevy Cruze became "engulfed in flames," FHP said. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Debris from the crash hit the left side of a fourth vehicle, a 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by a 41-year-old Palm Bay woman.

The 48-year-old Palm Bay man driving the SUV and his 15-year-old male passenger from Palm Bay were uninjured, as were the other drivers and the 22-year-old male passenger from Vero Beach in the Ford, FHP said.
