Palm Beach letter: Congressional Jan. 6 select committee is a sham

The most important sentence in Antonio Fins’ article, “Panel: Trump targeted officials,” [Palm Beach Daily News, June 30] is “Pollsters noted those percentages are largely unchanged since January,” referencing a Quinnipiac poll. The reason the Jan. 6 Committee has had so little impact on public opinion is because of its objectives, and the way it was constituted and operates.

It's more than ironic, it's intentional, that the committee chosen by Nancy Pelosi and the Biden Administration to investigate the supposed "threat to our democracy" is itself threatening our democracy to ensure that former President Donald Trump cannot run for President in the future.

Due process is denied by having no members of the committee or counsel to present challenging witnesses or evidence or cross-examine witnesses.

The most ludicrous of all assertions is that because some people told Trump that his legal theories were worthless, he shouldn't have pursued them. How many people told the advocates for legalized abortion, gay marriage, universities and employers racially discriminating in admissions and hiring, etc. that their theories were legally unsustainable before one lawyer convinced the Supreme Court that they were.

Not long after the Jan. 6 Committee concludes its work, it will be recognized as one of the most egregious violators of democratic principles in our nation's history.
