Palm Desert's Caden Breisch ends high school golf season in CIF-SCGA event

Caden Breisch of Palm Desert High School ended his boys' golf season Wednesday with a 64th-place finish in the CIF-SCGA Southern California High School Championship.

Breisch, the only Coachella Valley high school player to reach the CIF/SCGA event, shot a 3-over 77 on the South Course at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills. Los Serranos was the site of both the individual and team event where three teams and nine individuals advance to the state tournament May 31 at Poppy Hill Golf Course in Pebble Beach.

Breisch, a sophomore for Palm Desert, played the back nine of the South Course first in even-par 37. On the front nine, Breisch had two bogeys, a double bogey and one birdie for a 40.

Of the golfers playing in the individual event, only the top nine golfers who are not on a team advancing to the state tournament will move on to Pebble Beach as an individual. The qualifying number was 71. Colin Li of Torrey Pines High School in San Diego was medalist with an 8-under 66.

In the team competition, Tesoro of Las Flores was the Southern California qualifier at 9-under 361 in the six-play, five-score format. Torrey Pines was second in the 10-team field at 365, while Oaks Christian of Westlake Village was third at 372. Those three teams will face three teams from Northern California in the state finals.

Two of the players on the Tesoro team, brothers Ethan and Dylan Block, are sons of Michael Block, the club professional from Arroyo Trabuco Country Club in Mission Viejo who caused a sensation by finishing 15th at the PGA Championship last week.

The CIF-SCGA event featured teams and individuals from the CIF's Southern San Diego, Los Angeles and Central sections.
