Palm Springs power shut-offs in July? Really, SoCal Edison?

Regarding The Desert Sun story, "SoCal Edison: Summer line work must be done." The SoCal Edison CEO and the board of directors should be arrested for endangering the lives of thousands of people by cutting power off during summer months.

Palm Desert library decision raises questions

My wife and I reside in Olympia, Washington and spend four months each year at our Sun City Palm Desert home. We are delighted to be patrons of excellent regional library systems in both locales. I served several years on the Timberland Regional Library board of trustees and was immensely proud of a five-county system that provided common services and administration as well as access to an amazing array of print and media materials that no single branch, regardless of size, could hope to provide on its own.

We are delighted to enjoy the same level of service in the various branches of the Riverside County system and are perplexed by the City of Palm Desert proposal to go it alone. We understand capital construction concerns, although we think the shared facility at the College of the Desert is more than adequate. And we wonder if a new stand-alone facility or two could possibly afford to replicate the extensive collection the existing branch shares with all other users of the regional system? Additionally, we wonder about the operating costs that must be absorbed.

Student loan forgiveness? Not on my bill

You are and must be responsible for your actions. If you buy a car on credit, you are responsible to pay your monthly installment. If you do not repay the loan for your car, it will be taken away. Same goes for your home. You are responsible.

Most of us in these situations are or at least act like, adults. We take our obligations seriously and responsibly.

So, what have we taught our children? Have we taught them that only certain things to which they have signed their names bear their responsibility? That for other items they get a free pass? What does this teach these borrowers about being responsible for their actions and what does it teach those who didn't take loans but must possibly pay for the loans that others have made. Does the idea of equality come to mind? Or as said in “Animal Farm,” "Some are more equal than others."

Everyone loves free stuff; however, the Student Loan Forgiveness program is only free to these borrowers – not to the general population for whom the bill comes due.
