Palmer Trinity girls, University boys win Palm Soccer Titles. Plus basketball and more soccer

The Palmer Trinity girls’ soccer team and University School boys’ soccer team won respective Palm League Championships.

Palmer Trinity defeated North Palm Beach-Benjamin in a shootout for the girls’ title.

With the match tied at one, penalty kicks were needed to determine the winner. Leading 3-2 in the shootout, senior goalkeeper Brittney Mills made a huge save to clinch the championship.

In the first half, Palmer Trinity senior Natalie Bellande dribbled from the middle toward the left side and eventually sent a left-footed cross to 8th grader Lila Algarin who finished for the 1-0 lead. Benjamin (9-1-1) evened things with four minutes remaining in the match to force PKs.

In the shootout, senior Jessica Leathe, Algarin and junior Angelica Deribeaux scored for the Falcons (7-2-1), setting the stage for Mills.

The champs also feature Scarlett Baur (8th), Daniels Carbajales-Vieta (10th); Maria Carvajal (9th); Caroline Crews (9th), Carolina De La Riva (10th), Luna Diaz (8th), Samantha Ehrenreich (9th), Julianna Hartigan (9th), Lucia Infante (9th), Mackenzie Metka (10th), Emma O’Connor (11th), Sydney Powell (11th), Cecilia Puig (10th), Sienna Siegel (12th), Sara Stephanou (10th), Elizabeth Sulkes (9th), Cailyn Sullivan (10th). The head coach is Ifeoma Dieke. The assistant coaches are Yaneash Donaldson and Andrea Moscetti.

The Palm League is split into two divisions: North and South. The winners of each division meet in the championship.

The South includes Gulliver Prep, Miami Country Day, Palmer Trinity, Ransom Everglades and University School. The North includes North Palm Beach-Benjamin, West Palm Beach-Oxbridge Academy, North Broward Prep, Pine Crest and Boca Raton-St. Andrew’s.

In the boys’ final, University School edged North Broward Prep 2-1.

Junior midfielder Rafael Matiello scored both goals with assists by junior captain Rafael Guerra and junior Evan Herman. The Sharks (11-2-2) took a 1-0 lead in the first half. North Broward Prep (10-6-1) evened things, but University again went ahead before halftime. Neither team scored in the second half.

University freshman goalkeeper Matthew Jean Baptiste played well, and junior Roger Baptiste was acknowledged Player of the Match for shutting down Christian Dohler, one of the best strikers in the state, according to Sharks coach Thiago Oliveira.

Baptiste is ECNL (Elite Club National League) 1st Team All Conference.

Basketball

The host Pembroke Pines Charter boys’ basketball team, which won state last season, defeated a very good Christopher Columbus team 84-57.

The Jaguars (14-2) feature a senior-laden group with four D1 prospects in their starting five, while Columbus is a young heralded unit with three freshmen and two sophomore starters.

In building a 17-point halftime lead, Pines Charter overwhelmed Columbus’s highly vaunted defense by making 7-of-9 three-pointers and 8-of-10 two-pointers, collectively 15-of-19 from the field.

For the game, Pines Charter shot 75-percent (30-of-40) from the field and 82-percent (14-of-17) from the free throw line. They were a perfect 6-for-6 in completing their “and ones.” Columbus (17-2) was 24-percent (5-of-21) from three-point range and 43-percent (23-of-54) from two-point range and 6-for-12 from the free throw line and 0-for-3 in completing “and ones.”

Led by senior point guards Geoffrey Sprouse (23 points) and Kolby King (16 points), they shot 6-of-9 from the 3-point arc and 9-of-11 from the free point line.

The Jaguars also feature a formidable pair of 6-foot-6 forwards (Caelum Ethridge and Elijah Wyche), scoring 14 and 19 points respectively. They also blocked nine shots. Ethridge was 4-of-6 on three-pointers.

On the girls’ side, in a rematch of last year’s region quarterfinal, Class 3A Palmer Trinity defeated Class 4A SLAM 59-49.

SLAM (13-6) was riding a three-game win streak. The Falcons improved to 10-7 with a solid victory, nearing post-season play. They beat SLAM a year ago in a 3A region QF, before losing to eventual state champ and powerhouse Miami Country Day.

For North Miami, first-year basketball player Fenishka Bertho continues to impress with big scoring and rebounding numbers as the Pioneers improved to 14-4.
