Land at the beach and a rental home may be on the horizon for a Pamlico County man who recently won $100,000 playing the N.C. Education Lottery.

Jone Buadromo of Bayboro purchased the winning Powerball ticket from the Handy Mart on N.C. 55 in Alliance for the April 11 drawing, but did not claim his prize immediately. He waited because he wanted to surprise his wife.

“I waited until the end of May because I wanted to surprise her on her birthday with the win,” Buadromo said in a press release.

He said his wife did not initially believe him and thought he was making a joke.

“I told her no, we really won," he said.

The $3 Power Play ticket matched numbers on four white balls and the Powerball to win $50,000. His prize doubled to $100,000 when the 2X multiplier hit.

“I didn’t believe it at first either,” he said. “I just tried to keep calm as much as possible.”

After required federal and state tax withholdings, Buadromo took home $71,011.

The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
