PANAMA CITY BEACH — The Beach is gearing up to revamp dozens of outdated roads next year.

In a City Council meeting last week, officials announced that almost 40 roadway sections across Panama City Beach are slated to be resurfaced in 2023. This makes up more than 17 miles of roads.

The project is estimated to cost the city more than $3.3 million.

"We're really excited about it," Mayor Mark Sheldon said. "We want to make sure people have a good, smooth start and finish to their day, so having good roadways is imperative."

The reason work will be done in sections, rather than resurfacing entire roads at once, is because some of the roads were constructed in phases, so portions of them are not yet worn down enough to need repairs.

A phased approach also allows the city to not repair a portion of road located near an upcoming capital improvement project.

Sheldon noted resurfacing should begin sometime near the beginning of next year, and he expected for all sections to be completed by the year's end.

"Our goal is to (eventually) resurface every city street that is in Panama City Beach," he said.
