Panhandle, South Plains bands competing in state marching contest

Several South Plains and Panhandle-area marching bands will compete to be named Texas' best at the 2022 UIL State Marching Band Championships this upcoming week in San Antonio.

2A, 4A and 6A bands from around Texas who qualified for the state contest by earning high marks in an area competition will converge on the Alamodome Monday through Wednesday, including eight schools from the Panhandle-South Plains.

Each band will march in a preliminary round with the top performers earning the opportunity to perform again in the final round. Schools only have the opportunity to compete in the state contest every other year.

Frenship High School will represent Lubbock in the 6A contest, which kicks off with prelims Monday morning, continuing throughout the day and into the evening hours. Frenship is scheduled for its preliminary performance at 12:30 p.m. Monday. Finals for 6A will take place Tuesday afternoon. In total, 42 bands are competing in class 6A; 14 will make it to the finals.

Hale Center, New Deal, Panhandle and Sundown will march in class 2A on Tuesday, with prelims in the morning and finals that evening. Eighteen bands are competing in the 2A contest and seven will advance to the finals. Panhandle will perform in prelims at 9 a.m. and New Deal at 10:45 a.m., followed immediately by Hale Center at 11 a.m. and Sundown at 12:15 p.m.

All three Canyon ISD high schools — Canyon High, Randall and first-year school West Plains — advanced to state and will represent the Canyon and Amarillo area in the 4A contest on Wednesday. Randall will step off at 11:45 a.m., followed by Canyon High at 12:30 p.m. and West Plains at 1 p.m. There are 23 bands competing in class 4A with 10 advancing to the Wednesday evening finals.

Tickets are $20 per person, per session and $35 for double-session tickets. The UIL encourages spectators to arrive early to avoid congestion at the doors. The box office will open 75 minutes prior to first performance of the day and doors will open 45 minutes prior to the first performance in each session. Tickets are also available in advance through Ticketmaster (with some additional fees).

Besides Frenship, 6A participants include Austin Lake Travis, Austin Vandegrift, Austin Westlake, Bridgeland, Brownsville Hanna, Cedar Park Vista Ridge, Conroe Oak Ridge, Conroe The Woodlands, Conroe The Woodlands College Park, Coppell, Cy-Fair, Cypress Woods, Dickinson, Dripping Springs, Duncanville, Fort Bend Austin, Friendswood Clear Brook, Harlingen, Hurst Bell, Katy Seven Lakes, Katy Taylor, Keller, Keller Timber Creek, Klein Oak, Laredo Alexander, Lewisville Flower Mound, Lewisville Hebron, Lewisville Marcus, McKinney Boyd, Midland, Odessa Permian, Pearland, Pearland Dawson, Round Rock, Round Rock Cedar Ridge, San Antonio Johnson, San Antonio Reagan, Tomball Memorial, Waxahachie, Wylie and Wylie East.

In addition to the Canyon schools, participants in class 4A include Alvarado, Anna, Bridge City, Burnet, Canton, Celina, China Spring, Comal Davenport, Corpus Christi Calallen, Floresville, Gatesville, Hidalgo Early College, Kaufman, Lumberton, Paris, Paris North Lamar, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City Grulla, Springtown and Sulphur Springs.

Class 2A participants, besides those listed above, are Anson, Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco, Bogata Rivercrest, Charlotte, Clarksville, Forsan, Ganado, Harper, Honey Grove, Mason, Santo, Shiner, Tenaha and Valley Mills.
