Panthers-Chiefs live game updates: Carolina misses 67-yard game-winning field goal

There probably weren’t too many people who thought the Carolina Panthers were going to go to Kansas City and upset the reigning Super Bowl champions Sunday.

But Carolina had a real chance.

The Panthers, who lost 33-31, got the ball at their 9 with 86 seconds left. Carolina got to midfield with nine seconds to play and ended up with a 67-yard field goal attempt from Joey Slye that would’ve won the game at the buzzer.

The kick sailed wide right.

“That’s a good football team and they’ve battled in every single game they’ve been in this year,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “And they played a heckuva game today.”

With nothing to lose, Carolina and head coach Matt Rhule tried everything in the first half: fake punts, hook-and-laterals, going for it on fourth down in field goal range. And all of that worked for awhile.

Carolina led at halftime.

Then the third quarter came.

Kansas City outgained Carolina 110-30 in the third quarter and the potent Chiefs offense began to get rolling. Kansas City flipped a 17-13 halftime deficit into a 26-17 fourth quarter lead.

But the Panthers just wouldn’t give up.

Down nine, the Panthers went for it on fourth and 14 near midfield on their next drive. QB Teddy Bridgewater was pressured and scrambled, leaping over a Chiefs player and taking a wicked hit to get the first down at the Kansas City 31.

That led to a touchdown and Kansas City led 26-24.

The Panthers got aggressive again, trying an onside kick. It failed and gave Kansas City a short field and the Chiefs eventually scored to run the lead back to 9. So what does Carolina do? The Panthers drove and scored again, with 1:53 left, to pull within two points. A second onside kick attempt failed and Kansas City got the ball at the Carolina 42.

The Panthers kept fighting, however, and Brian Burns sacked Mahomes on Kansas City’s next possession, eventually forcing a punt and that final possession.

Carolina (3-6) lost its fourth straight game. Kansas City (8-1) won its fourth straight.

Mahomes completed 30-of-45 passes for 372 yards and four touchdowns. Tight end Travis Kelce caught 10 passes for 159 yards and Tyreek Hill caught nine for 113 yards and two scores.

Carolina quarterback Bridgewater completed 36-of-49 passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns. Christian McCaffrey making his return from an ankle injury, ran 18 times for 69 yards and a score and caught 10 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown. Curtis Samuel had nine catches for 105 yards and a touchdown and he ran three times for 13 yards.

CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY TD: Chiefs 33, Panthers 31

1:53, fourth quarter: Carolina got another big fourth quarter drive, scoring on a 1-yard run from Christian McCaffrey to close within two points again.

TYREEK HILL TD: Chiefs 33, Panthers 24

7:40, fourth quarter: Hill caught a 2-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes, as the Chiefs answered the Panthers’ score. After Carolina’s failed onside kick attempt, Kansas City got the ball at the Carolina 44.

TEDDY BRIDGEWATER TD: Chiefs 26, Panthers 24

10:22, 4th quarter: The Panthers got into striking distance after a memorable drive, finished by a 4-yard QB draw from Bridgewater.

The Panthers went for it on fourth and 14 during the drive, and Bridgewater was pressured and scrambled. He ran up the middle of the field, leaping over a Chiefs player and taking a wicked hit to get the first down at the Kansas City 31.

On the next play, McCaffrey made an incredible diving grab — similar to one Curtis Samuel made to start the drive — and gave the Panthers a first down at the Chiefs 7. That helped set up Bridgewater’s second rushing touchdown of the season.

The Panthers tried an onside kick but failed.

TYREEK HILL TD: Chiefs 26, Panthers 17

14:23, 4th quarter: The Panthers blew a coverage and let Tyreek Hill get behind the defense for an easy 28-yard scoring pass from Patrick Mahomes. The extra point was missed.

CLYDE EDWARDS-HELAIRE TD: Chiefs 20, Panthers 17

4:42, third quarter: The Chiefs finally grabbed the lead after Patrick Mahomes hit Travis Kelce with a 44-yard pass on third down after Mahomes just avoided a sack from Brian Burns. That gave the Chiefs the ball inside the Panthers’ 15.

After a jet sweep Tyreek Hill, the Chiefs ran a play where Mahomes faked a handoff to Edwards-Helaire going right, and faked a reverse to Hill going left. Then Mahomes rolled to his right and hit Edwards-Helaire, the former LSU star, for a 4-yard score. That gave Kansas City its first lead.

Chiefs lineman Mike Remmers leaves the game

With 6:54 left in the third quarter, Chiefs offensive lineman Mike Remmers left the game. He was replaced y rookie Yasir Durant.

Remmers has an injury to his ribs and is questionable to return.

Rookie LB Sam Franklin steps up

The Panthers came up a stop on a Chiefs’ screen pass to Le’Veon Bell deep in Panthers territory on their first drive of the second half.

Sam Franklin, a rookie linebacker from Temple, came up, made the tackle and forced a third at 15 at the Panthers 24.

Then, Patrick Mahomes was then sacked by Franklin after he tried to scramble to buy time. That forced a 48-yard field goal that Harrison Butker hooked left.

The Panthers got into position for a 51-yard field goal from Joey Slye after the possession change. After the Chiefs stopped back-to-back Christian McCaffrey runs on second and short and third and short, Slye’s kick looked good but just hooked into the left upright with 7:21 left in the third quarter.

That gave Kansas City the ball near midfield.

HALFTIME: Panthers lead by 4

The Panthers emptied the playbook in the first half at Kansas City and lead the Super Bowl champs.

Carolina converted a fake punt on fourth down, scored on a fourth down play in the red zone and tried a hook-and-lateral, which didn’t quite work.

It’s all resulted in a four point lead. Christian McCaffrey has 48 rush yards, 43 receiving yards and a receiving score.

Kansas City QB Patrick Mahomes was 17-of-26 for 196 yards and a touchdown. But Carolina has kept Mahomes off the field. The Panthers had 19 minutes, 23 seconds with the ball compared to 10:37 for Kansas City in the first half.

Neither team was good on third down: Carolina was 2-for-10; Kansas City 2-for-9.

Kansas City and Mahomes will get the ball to start the second half.

JOEY SLYE FG: Panthers 17, Chiefs 13

0:50, second quarter: Joey Slye made his 19th field goal of the season after Carolina’s drive stalled. On third down, the Panthers tried another trick play on a Sunday that’s been full of them so far.

Here’s what they tried: Teddy Bridgewater threw a short pass to Robby Anderson who immediately tossed the ball backwards to Christian McCaffrey, who tried to run around the right side. The Chiefs stopped the “hook-and-lateral” play short of the first down, forcing the kick.

The Panthers play was very similar to one the Rams ran recently.

Demarcus Robinson TD: Panthers 14, Chiefs 13

3:45, second quarter: A bit of trickeration there by the Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes looked while he was walking up to the line to call an audible, but then ran back to the left behind center and caught the shotgun snap while in motion. He then found Demarcus Robinson streaking across the back of the end zone.

Carolina’s lead is almost gone.

HARRISON BUTKER FG: Panthers 14, Chiefs 6

11:01, second quarter: The Panthers haven’t forced a punt today, but they have held the Chiefs out of the end zone.

Harrison Butker just made his second field goal of the day, this one an impressive 55-yard kick against a strong left-right crosswind.

CURTIS SAMUEL TD: Panthers 14, Chiefs 3

12:39, second quarter: The Panthers converted a fake punt early in the second quarter from its 45. Punter Joseph Charlton hit Brandon Zylstra over the middle for 28 yards. Kansas City was pressuring hard on defense and the call worked perfectly. Carolina got a first down at the Chiefs 28.

Three plays later, Curtis Samuel took a flip pass in the back field from Teddy Bridgewater and ran 14 yards around right end, getting a great block from Mike Davis as he neared the goal line.

HARRISON BUTKER FG: Panthers 7, Chiefs 3

1:38, first quarter: After the Panthers took a 7-0 lead, Kansas City drove down the field but quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw three straight incompletions at the Carolina 21. Harrison Butker’s 39-yard field goal was his 14th make of the season and cut the Panthers’ lead to four.

CHIEFS DEFENSIVE END INJURED

Kansas City defensive end Taco Charlton left the game on the opening series. He has an ankle injury and is questionable to return.

CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY TD: Panthers 7, Chiefs 0

6:07, first quarter: Carolina started the game by winning the toss and going on offense. A 15-play drive gave Carolina a fourth and 3 at the Chiefs 9. Teddy Bridgewater retreated against an all-out blitz and hit Christian McCaffrey who was open on the left side and scored easily. An 8 minute, 53-second drive that kept Kansas City’s explosive offense off the field. It was the longest opening-series drive for Carolina this season.

Christian McCaffrey will play and is warming up

For the first time in six weeks, we’re about to watch Christian McCaffrey play running back.
