Panthers’ coaching staff will work with these 3 QB prospects at the Senior Bowl
The first order of business for Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer should be charting a plan forward at quarterback. Starter Teddy Bridgewater ended the 2020 season on a disappointing note, finishing a downward trend with his worst performance of the year against the Saints in Week 17. In the second half, Bridgewater was benched for backup P.J. Walker, who didn’t play any better.
We know the team is looking for options at the position because they brought in free agent Dwayne Haskins for a visit earlier this week. He left without signing but it says something that they’d even kick the tires on Haskins given what we saw from him Week 16.
The Panthers may or may not draft a new potential franchise quarterback in this year’s draft. Either way, it doesn’t hurt to have all the intel you can get. That’s why it’s good news they’re one of the two teams who will be coaching in this year’s Senior Bowl.
According to organizer Jim Nagy, Matt Rhule’s staff will be coaching the “American” squad. Here are the three quarterback prospects they’ll be working with.
Kyle Trask, Florida: 6-foot-5, 240 pounds
Trask is the big name here and he’s considered one of the top QB prospects in this class. He can’t compete with the top four of Trevor Lawrence, Trey Lance, Zach Fields and Justin Fields but some people have him just outside that group. For what it’s worth, Pro Football Focus has Trask ranked just ahead of Alabama’s Mac Jones, who they mocked to Carolina at No. 8 recently. Trask boasts a huge frame and some impressive production during his college career. In 27 games he totaled 7,386 passing yards, 69 touchdowns, 15 interceptions and a 168.5 passer rating. He averaged 9.1 yards per attempt and completed 67.9% of his throws.
Kellen Mond, Texas A&M: 6-foot-3, 217 pounds
Mond’s college numbers aren’t as good as Trask’s, but he offers more experience as a four-year starter. In 46 games for the Aggies, he posted 9,661 passing yards, 71 touchdowns, 27 picks and a passer rating of 132.0. Mond only completed 59% of his passes though and averaged 7.1 yards per attempt. He’s also a rushing threat, having added another 1,609 yards and 22 touchdowns on the ground.
Jamie Newman, Georgia: 6-foot-4, 230 pounds
The third QB on Rhule’s roster will be Newman, who transferred to Georgia after three years at Wake Forest. Newman opted out of the 2020 season. Before that, he totaled 35 passing touchdowns, 16 interceptions and completed 60.5% of his throws while averaging 7.8 yards per attempt. He also scored 10 rushing touchdowns. Draft Wire has Newman ranked as the No. 8 quarterback prospect in this class.
