Panthers ride late rally to victory

May 2—DURHAM — Zoey Pietras and Rachel Morales had key hits that sparked a 5- run rally in the top of the seventh inning as E.O. Smith collected a 9- 4 victory over Coginchaug in a non- conference softball game on Saturday.

Morales also made a key catch in the bottom of the seventh to help seal the win for the Panthers (4-5).

Ashley Lewis hit a 3-run homer in the top of the fourth for E. O. Smith that erased a 3- 0 deficit after one inning. Lewis also struck out eight batters and allowed six hits in the circle.

The Blue Devils ( 9- 2) had a 7- game winning streak snapped.

BASEBALL

A.J. Rooks threw a complete- game 2- hit shutout, striking out 15 batters with one walk in helping lift Coventry to a 3-0 North Central Connecticut Conference victory over Canton.

The Patriots ( 9- 2) broke a scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the fifth on backto- back doubles by Gavin Covell ( 2 hits) and Austin Jonas. Following two walks, Mason Godi reached on an infield error that scored Jonas to make it 2- 0.

Rooks also singled with a stolen base and scored a key insurance run in the sixth on an infield error.

In Lebanon, Jacob Citro highlighted a 5- run bottom of the second with a 2- run double as Lyman Memorial pulled away for a 12- 4 Eastern Connecticut Conference inter- division victory over Plainfield at Hanover Field.

The Bulldogs (10-2) were sparked by its top four hitters in the lineup — Jeremiah Bobbi ( 2 hits, run, RBI), Josh Person (3 hits, 3 runs, RBI), Daylan Griffin (2 hits, 4 runs, RBI) and Jared Russo (2 runs, 2 RBI).

Ben Darrow (3-1) struck out nine batters and walked two while allowing two earned runs and six hits to pick up the win.

BOYS LACROSSE

Boden Landers scored six goals for RHAM, which dropped a 13- 9 Central Connecticut Conference inter- division decision to Hall in Hebron.

Jackson McKinley added two goals while Brady Lalonde had a goal and two assists for the Raptors (3-5). Matt Richard made 11 saves in goal.

FRIDAY'S RESULTS BASEBALL Cam Bill went 3- for- 4 with a home run, scored three runs and had three RBI as Parish Hill cruised to a 20- 1 Capital Region Athletic League vic- tory in 4 i/t innings over Weaver.

Bill also struck out all six batters he faced and Kian Quickel had two hits, scored two runs and had two RBI to lift the Pirates ( 3- 6 overall, 3- 1 league).

Lucas Tarbell ( 2 hits) doubled and homered while Dylan McMahon (2 hits) also doubled in the victory.

In Storrs, Aidan Gilbert had three hits and Parker Woodmansee added two hits with three RBI to lead E.O. Smith to a 10-0 CCC East Division victory in six innings over Tolland at Farrell Field.

Gilbert also threw a complete game 3- hitter for the Panthers ( 5- 4 overall, 1- 3 league) SOFTBALL

Errors proved costly for E.O. Smith in its 6-5 CCC East Division road loss at Enfield.

The Panthers ( 2- 3 league) committed four errors that led to five unearned runs.

Ashley Lewis and Dakotoa Babbitt each had 2- run triples for E. O. Smith.

Leadoff hitter Meredith Higgins (2 hits) hit a 2-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning that put the Eagles ( 9- 2, 6- 0) ahead to stay.

Taylor Fitch had three hits, including a home run, scored four runs and had four RBI as RHAM rolled to a 16-3 CCC inter- division victory in six innings over Simsbury in Hebron.

Linnea Carlson went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and five RBI as the Raptors (9-2). Jordyn Fitch (2 hits, 3 runs) allowed six hits over six innings, striking out three with no walks.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Joelle Goralnik had two goals and Kaylee Macca and Lauren Feige each had one in RHAM's 9-2 CCC inter-division loss to Conard in West Hartford.

GIRLS TENNIS

Ashlyn White rallied to win in three sets (3-6, 6-4, 6-4) at No. 3 singles for Coventry ( 1- 2 overall, 1- 2 league) in a 5-2 NCCC loss to Ellington (7-0, 7-0).

Ella Grindle and Lauren Hille won at No. 3 doubles (6-3, 6-2) for the Patriots.

In Storrs, Teresa Hooker ( 7- 5, 6- 4), Bridget Austin (6-0, 6-2) and Brynn Malryn ( 6- 4, 6- 4) all won singles matches in straight sets as RHAM (3-4) downed E.O. Smith, 6- 1, in a CCC match.

Joyce Zhou ( 7- 6, 6- 2) won at No. 1 singles for the Panthers (3-2).
