Paoli Peaks ski resort ends 2022-23 season in late February as snow base dwindles

Some people are grateful for warm weather in the local forecast, but not everyone is thrilled.

Paoli Peaks, a local ski resort in Southern Indiana, had to end its 2022-23 season Wednesday after struggling to make snow due to the higher temperatures and recent rain, a social media post said.

The resort opened the season on Dec. 24, but had struggled to produce snow for its slopes. General Manager Chris Shadid said all pre-purchased tickets for skiing, snowboarding, tubing or ski school lessons would be refunded.

"Mother Nature wasn’t on our side this year, and while we worked hard to manage through the rain and warm weather, we no longer have the snow base needed to remain open," Shadid said.

The resort had to pause operations on Dec. 29 due to the weather but was able to reopen on Feb. 4. Last season, Paoli Peaks was also forced to suspend operations the day after Christmas due to a lack of cold air.

Shadid thanked the Paoli Peaks team for producing snow as much as it could and thanked customers for understanding the circumstances. He said the resort will use the off time to prepare for the 2023-24 season.

"We’re just as disappointed as you that this season didn’t have better weather in store, but we have no doubt we’ll all be back soon," the statement said. "We care deeply about this resort and will be working hard in the off season to prepare for a better season ahead."

Paoli Peaks is located at 2798 W County Rd 25 S in Paoli, Indiana. The resort is about an hourlong drive from Louisville.
