Paolo Banchero ‘will never get over’ loss to UNC in Final Four

It’s been a few months since the UNC basketball program ended Duke’s season and Coach K’s career in the Final Four, taking down the No. 2 Blue Devils in New Orleans.

The memory is one that will live forever for UNC fans and rightfully so as they now have bragging rights over their biggest rival. But it’s also one that Duke star Paolo Banchero will never get over.

Ahead of Thursday’s NBA draft, the expected Top 3 pick talked to Complex about his college career and journey to the NBA. One of the questions that was asked to him was about that loss to the Tar Heels in the Final Four and Banchero offered up this answer:

Let’s rip the band-aid off, have you gotten over the UNC loss?
I don’t think I’ll ever fully get over it. The first month I told myself: ‘Just stop. Stop dwelling on it.’ To say ‘get over it’, I’ll never get over it.

The follow-up to that was if it would haunt Banchero forever as he noted he thought the team was the best in the country at the time:

Do you feel like that’s gonna haunt you forever?
Oh yeah, I feel like we were the best team in the country. We were playing so good and the way we lost coming down the wire like that… it could’ve went either way. The fact it didn’t go our way is going to definitely haunt me a bit.

While Banchero is set to make a TON of money in the NBA and he could go on to have a successful career there, UNC fans will always have that moment over him, about a month after they stunned the Blue Devils in Coach K’s home finale as well.
