With most schools out for the summer, attention for junior golfers turns to golf courses across northeast Ohio, competing in junior tournaments and honing their skills for the OHSAA fall season.

Liam Curtis of Kent, a sophomore at Kent Roosevelt when he tees off for the Rough Riders in the fall, started his season with a victory in the Northern Ohio PGA Junior Tournament boys 16-19 age division at Lake Forest Country Club in Hudson.

Curtis was consistent, firing a 1-over par on the front and 2-over par on the back nine that bested runner-up, Trey Lautenschleger of Dover, by two strokes.

Other local boys in the 16-19 division included Max Devins of Aurora, who was 11th, and Cole Hostetler of Rootstown, who was 14th in the 54-player field.

Maddie Kost (fifth) and Sydnie Leavery (eighth), both of Kent, earned top 10 finishes in the girls 16-19 age division.

Grace Vidovic of Aurora tied for seventh place in the girls 11-15 age division.

Junior PGA Section Championship

The Northern Ohio PGA Junior Section Championship that advances junior golfers to the National Junior PGA Championship is set to tee off at Westfield Country Club on Monday and concludes at Portage Country Club on Tuesday.

Local junior golfers seeking one of the two spots available, one for boys and one for girls, include Brooklyn Millard, Jude Abbass, Parker Barrett, Chris Pollak, Grace Vidovic and Jack Zeid of Aurora; Madolyn Kost, Ashlyn Leavery, Sydnie Leavery and Christian Mineo of Kent, and Cole Hostetler of Rootstown.

Ohio Senior Open

Following the end of 36 holes at Firestone’s West Course, Bob Sowards of Dublin and Sam Arnold of Cincinnati were tied at the top of the leaderboard of the Ohio Senior Open championship.

Sowards sunk an 8-foot putt on the first playoff hole to win the event for the fourth consecutive time.

While the golfers from the Southern Ohio PGA garnered the top two spots, local golfers made a run for the championship over the final 18 holes.

Mitch Camp, director of golf at Club Walden in Aurora, scored an eagle on the 13th hole and tallied three birdies that gave him a final round of 3-under par. Camp missed the playoff by one stroke, earning third place.

Other local golfers in the top 10 included former Kent State University standout Rob Moss, in fifth place at 1-over par, and Tom Atchison of Silver Lake, who took home eighth place after firing 2-over par.

The Ohio Senior Open celebrated its 37th year this summer. Hosted by the Northern Ohio PGA, the next amateur-professional tournament on the schedule is June 27-29 when the 101st Ohio Open competes at the newly-renovated Westfield Country Club in Westfield Center.

Sponsored by Pyramid Treating, the Ohio Open registration closes June 20. Register for the event at thenorthernohiopga.com.
