Paradise Cove opens for season

May 31—The smell of sunscreen and whistle-blowing brought Paradise Cove Aquatic Center back to life this weeked. The aquatic center opened Saturday, May 28 at 11 a.m.

Despite the chilly weather, several families were out to swim and use the freshly-painted slides. However, it's expected the parks will be busy on Memorial Day.

"It's a cooler day. So we don't have as many people here today for opening day," Erin Moore, director of Richmond Parks and Recreation. "Usually the first day on Saturday is not as busy. It's usually busier on Monday. Monday is usually the day that it gets warmer and that more people come out and they don't have anything planned as opposed to visiting with friends and family on the weekend."

The aquatic center has a new pool management company who "take care of all of our lifeguards and all the safety features on the inside of the facility," Moore said.

"We got the slots repainted as you can see, they're white on the inside," Moore said. "They used to be blue and teal and now we've completely refinished them and there had been issues over the past three or four years with paint peeling. This past year, we were able to completely just restore those and they look really nice now and we haven't had any issues"

In addition to the concessions, a Kona Ice cart will be at the park everyday for a refreshing treat.

The park will be open every day until August when it will shift to weekends only, starting on Sunday, Aug. 14. The park will close on Labor Day, Sept. 5.
