Paragliders in fancy dress fly over the French alps

STORY: Locations: Saint-Hilaire du Touvet, France

Paragliders in fancy dress took to the skies over the French alps

From Top Gun pilots to billiard players and a handful of brides

around 100 paragliders participated in the annual flying carnival, 'Icarnaval'

[Maxime Autin, Paraglider]

“It’s a love story between friends, we’ve known each other for a while now, and we have been flying together for two years, and so we thought we would wear bride dresses to have a small wedding.”

The unpredictable weather grounded the pilots for a few hours

but the delay gave them an opportunity to show off their attire

[Hugo Heneault, Paraglider]

“We are excited, it’s my first time, I’m excited to fly. We did a lot of last-minute preparations, but there should be a window in the weather to fly, so now, we need to take off with the weather and the public.”

The village of Saint-Hilaire has been hosting

a regular paragliding contest since the 1970s

It introduced the costume contest in 1987
