Paramus Police Chief Ehrenberg will retire after 10 years; deputy chief to take over

Paramus Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg announced Tuesday that he will be retiring after serving more than 10 years as head of the borough police department.

His retirement will take effect on Friday, he said in an email.

"I would like to thank everyone for their professionalism and courtesy throughout these many years," wrote Ehrenberg, who also served for a time as chief of the borough's volunteer fire department.

Ehrenberg's deputy police chief, Robert Guidetti, will take over as head of the police department, Paramus Mayor Chris DiPiazza said in a separate email to NorthJersey.com.

"The governing body, myself and the residents and businesses of Paramus owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Chief Ehrenberg," DiPiazza wrote. "Not only for his 10.5 years of service as chief of police but his 37 years in total as a member of the police department. The chief has left not only the town in a safer more ready position than he started but also the police department is now in a better position to handle the ever-changing problems of today and tomorrow. I wish him and his family nothing but the best of luck in his next chapter. "

"I look forward to the appointment of deputy chief Robert Guidetti to be the Paramus police department's next chief," the mayor added.

Inspired his by father, also a volunteer fireman in Paramus, he joined Fire Company 4 at age 18.

“My father was the fire chief of Paramus in 1990, and he joined the department in the 60s,” Ehrenberg told The Record in 2018. “That’s one of the reasons I got involved in the fire department.”

His son eventually also volunteered at the department, making three generations of the Ehrenbergs at Fire Company 4.

“Public service was just inbred into our family,” said Ehrenberg, who became a police officer at 22.
