Paranormal investigators to host event at Buckingham House

Is there paranormal activity in Newark? One group is looking to find out.

Paranormal investigators from the Poasttown Paranormal Academy and the Newark Paranormal Society are hosting an interactive event to engage and teach Newark residents about the paranormal world through an event titled "Have Evidence Now What?"

Beth Deering, a psychic medium and paranormal investigator, is originally from Newark, Ohio, and wants to bring her knowledge and experiences back to the city, she said. To do so, the event is an introduction of the paranormal and a fundraiser to bring a larger-scale experience to the city next year.

"The field of the paranormal has gotten so ridiculous and so misunderstood. We want to bring dignity back. We want to bring education back," Deering said. "I want to bring back the reason why I fell in love with the field to begin with."

The event costs attendees $50 and will take place at the Buckingham House, 5 N. 6 St, on June 4 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. To attend, people must be 12 years of age or older.

The Poasttown Paranormal Academy hosts interactive paranormal investigations at the Poasttown Elementary School located in Middletown, Ohio. The academy is a two-day program spent at the location where students participate in workshops and paranormal investigations.

Joe Campbell, founder of Newark’s Paranormal Society and Bill Squires, a paranormal investigator, work with the academy to conduct workshops during the weekend programs.

"They are the only team I work with professionally because they are so knowledgeable," Deering said. “They do not embellish — if something's not there, they're not going to make something up just to toot your horn and say 'Oh yeah, there's something here.'"

During the workshops, Campbell and Squires share their equipment with academy students who create their own tools to use during investigations.

The June 4 event serves as a smaller version of the Academy that will include workshops and lectures from those a part of the academy and Newark Paranormal Society. Anyone who attends the event is encouraged to bring evidence the investigators will look into. Attendees will also be able to explore the Buckingham House.

"Sometimes we have a bad perception of what we do, but we want to show them there's a different side of that," Campbell said.

Campbell said he hopes those who attend the mini-seminar in June are excited about potentially bringing a larger-scale event to Newark.

"What we want them to take away from the whole thing after they're done with this is 'Wow, that was pretty cool. We had fun. It was a really good day and I would like to do this again,'" Campbell said.

Deering would ideally like to host an academy event in Newark during May 2023, which will likely be a more in-depth event complete with tours of paranormal and historical locations in Newark in addition to workshops and lectures.
