HENDERSONVILLE - Pardee UNC Health Care announced Jan. 9 that it has named its next chief of staff, and it's a nuerologist who's been at Pardee since 2011.

According to a news release, Dr. Joel Callahan, M.D., FAAN, was named Pardee's chief of staff, and he began his new role on Jan. 1. He will serve his term as chief of staff for the next two years, the release said.

“I am honored to step into this role and grateful for the opportunity to lead Pardee’s exceptional team of clinicians,” said Dr. Callahan in the release. “I look forward to working with my colleagues as we navigate the year ahead and continue to provide high-quality and compassionate care to our patients, their families and our community.”

In this role, Dr. Callahan, a board-certified neurologist, will provide leadership, guidance and a voice for medical staff, as well as create a dynamic physician environment committed to high-quality, patient-focused care and safety, the release said. “Dr. Callahan is an exceptional neurologist and highly-regarded leader within our medical staff,” Dr. Greg McCarty, chief medical officer of Pardee UNC Health Care, said in the release. “His experience and expertise make him an asset to the community and Pardee. We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Callahan to this role.”

Dr. Callahan succeeds Natascha Susanne Lautenschlaeger, MD, who has held the role of chief of staff for the past two years. According to Pardee, Dr. Lautenschlaeger was the hospital's first female, non-U.S. national chief of staff.

Dr. Callahan specializes in treating headaches, neuropathy, EMG/EEG, epilepsy, diseases of muscles, dementia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and spasticity. He earned his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in neurology at the University of Colorado Hospital.

He is also fellowship-trained in neuromuscular disease, the release said. Dr. Callahan has been with Pardee for the past 12 years, most recently serving as the medical director of Pardee Neurology Associates.
