The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office cited a husband and wife after their child fired a weapon at a New Hanover County park over the weekend.

Lt. Jerry Brewer, public information officer with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, said authorities were dispatched to Veterans Park at 835 Halyburton Memorial Parkway on Saturday afternoon. There, they confirmed a child was inside a car, gained access to an unsecured firearm and fired one round out the back window of the car.

According to sheriff's office records, the child's mother was cited for misdemeanor child abuse. The child's father was cited for misdemeanor child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a child and allowing a minor access to a firearm.
