Parents concerned about what Strasburg students bought at book fair

Strasburg Board of Education

Wednesday meeting

KEY ACTION: Heard from two parents about books their elementary students purchased during a book fair that they felt were inappropriate for young students. The parents cited "The Breakaways" by Cathy G. Johnson and "All Are Welcome" by Suzanne Kaufman. One of the parents said the "All Are Welcome" story was great but objected to the illustrations.

DISCUSSION: Superintendent Vince Lindsey said hundreds of books come into the book fair from book companies. He thanked the parents for being alert and knowing what their children are reading. Elementary Principal Shelia Doerschuk recently went through every book in the elementary library to make sure they were appropriate for students to read after the information about the books came to light.

OTHER ACTION:

  • Approved class electives for the 2023-24 school year. Director of Continuous Improvement Emily Palmer gave a presentation about the new electives: ancient reel history, anatomy, computer applications and design, creative writing, and global studies. Palmer said they are offering different options for students and replacing older classes.

  • Accepted the resignation of Kasey Robinson, parent liaison, effective at the end of the school year.

  • Granted four-year certified teaching contracts to Rachel Ripley, Garrett Rackhorst, and Samantha Raber.

  • Adopted two resolutions authorizing an attorney-client fee contract and authorizing litigation for social media and approved an attorney-client fee contract. Lindsey said the district will be moving forward with these legal issues.

FOR YOUR INFO:

  • The prom will be held May 5 at the Ponds Venue in Beach City.

  • The National Honor Society induction will be held at 6 p.m. May 7.

UP NEXT: Meets at 6:30 p.m. May 17 in the administration building at 140 Bodmer Ave.
