Parents frustrated with delays to Sacramento City Unified independent study program

School started nearly two weeks ago for students in the Sacramento City Unified School District, but hundreds of students who opted for the independent study program have yet to be assigned a teacher. The program is supposed to be an alternative for students whose parents are not ready for them to be back in the classroom in person in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Theresa Meredith said she enrolled two of her children in the program before the school year started. "I decided to not put them in regular school and put them in independent study because I have a new baby, and I also work in the medical field and I was just trying to prevent exposure with everyone having to be quarantined," Meredith said. However, she said she is already having second thoughts, citing an apparent lack of organization with the independent study program.
