Parents' paradise: Lubbock moms prepare to open lounge, play space off 82nd Street

UPDATE: The Mom Lounge will open on Jan. 14, 2023.

A parents' paradise is coming to Lubbock later this winter, thanks to two local moms who hope to build a community in their upcoming business.

Mary McCabe and Anna O’Steen, the owners of The Mom Lounge, came up with the idea after many discussions in a Starbucks about how lonely parents could become.

"We would sit and chat about our experience with our first-born children, how lonely we felt and that there was nowhere we could go with our new infant," the duo stated in an email. "Sure, they could meet at Starbucks, but a mom can’t really get on the floor and let their baby crawl. We were determined to open a place that moms and families could go and work on their postpartum, while also meeting other new moms."

The Mom Lounge will open at 4414 82nd St.
Suite 216 in the Village Shopping Center in December 2023.

This drive kicked off the search for a space, and they decided on 4414 82nd St., Suite 216, in the Village Shopping Center. They chose the space due to nearby stores, heavy traffic, and the nearby Starbucks and Ike’s Woodfire Grill.

The space is in construction, but will feature a play space for newborns through 5 years old, a classroom and a comfortable lounge area. The lounge will include couches and bean bag chairs, while the play area will have a slide that has a peg walk, sensory wall, felt wall and Montessori inspired toys. A separate area will have a "tummy time area" for infants to explore.

"When a mom enters the lounge, they are given a clean blanket that parents can use to get on the cozy floor and help their infants work on muscle and social skills," the owners said. "We believe that playing is learning."

Continuing on the learning course, the duo plan to offer a variety of classes, including:

  • Parent-and-Me classes such as music, signing time, mindful stretching.

  • Pre- and postnatal.

  • Pelvic floor.

  • Breastfeeding.

  • Baby LED feeding.

  • Core classes to improve a child's social skills, coordination, mindfulness, confidence, balance, and build the mind-body connection.

"These classes are also a great way for a parent or caregiver to get out of the house, meet other parents, and build lasting friendships," they said. "As we have been chatting with local moms, one class that we’re excited to offer is: 'I just had a baby. Now What?'"

Another hope for the duo is to build a supportive community.

"We would love to tell the Lubbock community that we are always here to listen and to help a mom on their parenting journey," they said. "Moms, it can get lonely and postpartum is real. So, we want to open the communication and let parents and families know that we have all been there."
