Parker Peace Pool will open on Memorial Day weekend

May 21—HENDERSON — Parker Peace Pool is being readied to open Memorial Day weekend. The official kickoff will be on May 29.

This year is special as it's the pool's 60th anniversary. It also marks a rebound from last year, when the pool didn't open at all because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In anticipation of the opening, "it's being painted today," said Amy O'Geary, president of the Parker Peace Pool board of directors. "Hopefully, we'll be filling it on Monday."

She pointed out that the complex also includes tennis, basketball and volleyball courts. "Officially, it's 'Parker Peace Park,' but the pool is the main attraction." O'Geary said.

Last year's hiatus left the park with some urgent needs, she said. The board mounted a capital campaign that netted more than $10,000.

"We are so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community," O'Geary said. "It could have just closed."

Recent days have been busy with cleanup and fixup, in addition to painting the pool.

The pool and other park features are available to members. O'Geary said that stock can be purchased to establish membership, but limited memberships are also available on a yearly basis.

John Suther, treasurer, said the annual fee for a family is $350 for stockholders. For an individual or senior citizen, it's $275.

Special rates are available for non-stockholders, he said.

Families or individuals interested in buying stock can obtain it from a current member who wishes to sell theirs or from the board.

Membership is open to residents of Vance, Granville, Warren and Franklin counties.

Parker Peace Park is at 715 Cedarwood Terrace in Henderson.
