Parsippany-Troy Hills school superintendent moving to West Morris Regional district

The Parsippany Troy Hills school district superintendent will be leaving her post at the end of this academic year, the school board announced on Friday.

Barbara Sargent, who’s been with Morris County's largest school district since 2017, will begin the following academic year at the West Morris Regional High School District. She could not be immediately reached for comment, and neither could the school board.

“The district appreciates Dr. Sargent’s significant contributions to the district over these past six years and supports and thanks Dr. Sargent for her unwavering dedication to the students, staff, community, and our board," a statement reads. “Sargent’s leadership contributed to the district’s success, particularly during the challenge of the pandemic."

West Morris Regional includes two high schools that serve Mendham borough and township, Chester borough and township and Washington Township in Morris County. The district served about 2,300 students in the last academic year, according to state data.

Sargent will take over her new post "on or about" Aug. 1, according to a statement online from Rob Strobel, the West Morris Board of Education president.

Prior to leading Parsippany's district, Sargent "served at several other districts for significant periods of time as a teacher, supervisor, principal, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, and a K-8superintendent," Strobel wrote. "In short, she has been a leader at all levels of education in New Jersey."

Parsippany replacement uncertain

It is not clear who Sargent’s replacement will be in Parsippany. The district has roughly 7,200 students spanning two high schools, two middle schools and 12 elementary schools as of the 2022 academic year.

As superintendent, Sargent steered those students through the lion’s share of the COVID-19 pandemic, including remote-learning.

In 2020, Sargent faced a no confidence vote from the teacher’s union over the district’s COVID-19 reopening plan.
