It's time to channel Betty White's energy, step up and be a friend of a Lafayette animal shelter.

White, who died last year at 99, was a known animal lover and advocate. She helped animals get adopted and promoted more humane treatment.

To celebrate what would have been her 100th birthday on Jan. 17, animal shelters across the country are holding events and fundraisers. The #BettyWhiteChallenge encourages people to donate to a local or national animal shelter or organization in White's name.

“Betty White was one of the biggest animal rights activists in the world, and it’s an honor to raise funds on her 100th birthday," said shelter Supervisor Shelley Delahoussaye. "It’s my hope that this will not only raise funds for the shelter but also showcase some of the animals that need a FUR-ever home."
