Part of a building in Brickell collapsed onto a street. Will the demolition continue?

A building demolition in the heart of Brickell took a turn for the worse after a piece of the structure fell onto the street over the weekend. Now, the City of Miami is deciding what’s next for the demolition.

On Monday, City of Miami officials met with the contractor, property owner, project engineer and Florida Department of Transportation over the collapse at the 700 SE 7th St. building Saturday afternoon. They granted limited access to the site to “evaluate the remaining structure” and “repair scaffolding protection” near the south sidewalk of 7 Street, according a statement from the City of Miami.

After that’s completed, FDOT will open Seventh Street, though the south sidewalk will remain closed, according to the statement.

Social media videos on Saturday showed Alpha Wrecking Group on-site tearing down the existing structure to make way for the proposed 80-story skyscraper, One Brickell Centre. Just before the collapse, a car drove past the spot where a chunk of building crashed into the street. No one was injured.

The contractor, according to the city, will have to provide a detailed report into what transpired, what contributed to the incident and what policies, procedures and conditions will change to prevent this from happening again. The demolition will resume once the contrator notifies the Occupational Safety and Health Administration — and the plan is reviewed and approved by the city’s building department.

Future demolition work, however, will only occur at night with full lane closures, the presence of police and a threshold inspector.
