Part of central Plainview evacuated Thursday due to gas leak

PLAINVIEW — A portion of a central Plainview neighborhood was evacuated Thursday morning after reports of a gas leak in the area.

Just after 10 a.m. Thursday, City of Plainview officials were asking residents who live on or between Joliet Street and Nassau Street from Fifth Street to Seventh Street to evacuate their homes until further notice. The evacuation area included Lloyd C. Woods Park and the Plainview Skatepark.

Around 11:15 a.m. officials expanded the evacuation area to include Sixth Street from Joliet to Denver streets.

A shelter for evacuees was available at the Plainview ISD Education Complex located at 24th and Yonkers and another at Ninth and Columbia Church of Christ, 808 Columbia Street.

The leak was contained just after 1 p.m. when officials announced residents could return to their homes with the exception of one block — Sixth Street from Lexington to Milwaukee — as crews continued to repair the line. Efforts to restore service were ongoing.

All residents were allowed to return home just after 5 p.m.

Plainview Fire Department, Plainview Police Department, City of Plainview public works and Atmos Energy worked to contain the leak, which city officials said was caused by a third-party contractor. No injuries or property damage was reported.
