Snow will mix with sleet and freezing rain in spots before stopping by midnight

The snow that began falling across the region around mid-morning on Wednesday will continue falling until midnight before stopping, according to the National Weather Service.

The snow is likely to mix with sleet or freezing rain in many places this evening.

Sullivan County and western Ulster County are expected to get the most snow.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for those areas, which is not expected to expire until 10 p.m.

The weather service is predicting a heavy mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain for Sullivan County and western Ulster County. Up to 5 to 8 inches of snow will fall there, with a glaze of ice on top of that.

Snow could fall at the rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour at the peak of the storm. Winds could be gusting up to 35 mph.

Elsewhere, the National Weather Service has issued winter weather advisories for the eastern half of Ulster County, and for Orange, Dutchess, Putnam, Westchester and Rockland counties. Those advisories will expire at 10 p.m. in Dutchess and eastern Ulster County, and at midnight in Orange, Rockland, Putnam and Westchester counties.

Those areas will all see snow changing to a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain at some point. In the southernmost parts of the region, precipitation could change to all rain by Wednesday evening.

The National Weather Service has also reduced the total amount of snow it expects to fall in some areas.

The weather service said Orange County will receive between 2 and 4 inches of snow, with 5 inches possible in some of the county's highest elevations. Dutchess County will see 1 to 3 inches of snow.

Putnam County will see 2 to 4 inches of snow, while 1 to 3 inches is expected in Rockland and Westchester counties.

A coastal flood advisory has been issued for Westchester County by the National Weather Service. It is scheduled to expire at 5 a.m. Thursday.

A light coating of ice is expected across the region.

The storm has caused relatively few power outages so far.

As of 4 p.m., Central Hudson was reporting 51 homes and businesses in Orange County were without power. The company expects to have their power restored by 7 p.m.

Con Edison said 15 customers in Westchester County had no power. The company expects those homes and businesses to have their power restored by 10 p.m.

Orange and Rockland Utilities and New York State Electric and Gas have only reported a handful of outages so far.

No major crashes have been reported on the area's roadways.
