Part of well-traveled city road to be closed

Jan. 8—HIGH POINT — Traffic on part of Deep River Road in northeast High Point will have to take a detour from next week into the summer for a bridge replacement project.

A section of Deep River Road near Hickswood Road will be blocked to all traffic from Jan. 16 to July 14, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation. The project also will close part of Hickswood Road.

The new bridge will be built on Deep River Road near the intersection of the two streets.

The detour for Deep River Road will be to take Deep River to Eastchester Drive, then Wendover Avenue east to Penny Road. The detour will conclude by taking Penny Road to Main Street/Greensboro Road, then to Jamestown Parkway and Lexington Avenue back to Deep River Road.

The detour for Hickswood Road will be to take Hickswood to Willard Road, then to Deep River Road back to Hickswood.

The DOT intends to post detour signs, High Point Transportation Director Greg Venable saidf.

"Luckily, the public has several options in the area to get around the closure," Venable told The High Point Enterprise. "Other roads that can be used in the area are Gordon Road and Willard Road."

Venable said that the bridge is slated to be replaced because of its age.

Deep River Road at Hickswood handles about 4,000 cars a day, according to city of High Point Transportation Department traffic counts.
