Teenager killed in high-speed crash at Paso Robles intersection

A teenager was killed Thursday evening when he sped through a Paso Robles intersection and collided with two other cars, police said.

The collision occurred about 5:15 p.m. at 34th and Spring streets, said Cmdr. Tod Rehner. The speeding vehicle was traveling northbound on Spring Street when it hit and the two other vehicles as they turned onto Spring from 34th Street.

A video posted to Facebook shows one vehicle turning left onto the northbound side of Spring Street and another turning left onto the southbound side when a black car races into the frame and collides with both.

Witnesses said the vehicle was traveling at speeds of 50 to 70 mph, he said.

The speeding driver struck the vehicles turning onto Spring Street before the drivers could get out of the way, Rehner said.

The 17-year-old boy driving the speeding vehicle died at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision, Rehner said. No other drivers or passengers were injured.

The Paso Robles Police Department is still investigating how fast the speeding driver was traveling at the time of the crash, Rehner said. Investigators will also be conducting toxicology screenings to determine whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash, he said.
