Passenger of car killed after collision with school bus in Renton

The passenger of a car is dead after a collision with a school bus in Renton Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Renton Police Department, at about 12:07 p.m. Renton Fire responded to a head-on collision involving a car and a school bus on Northeast 3rd Street between Edmonds Avenue Northeast and Bronson Way Northeast.  Police say speed and rain were both factors in the crash.

“During the course of the collision the car was spinning and fishtailing and as it hit the school bus,” said Renton PD’s Public Information Officer, Meeghan Black.

One passenger in the car was killed and two people were transported to a hospital. The three who were in the red sedan are all believed to be in their late teens or early 20s. Police also believe that the sedan’s driver may have been impaired at the time of the crash.

“They [drug recognition experts] will undoubtedly apply for a blood warrant while they’re at the hospital, but there was suspicion to believe, and so they launched an investigation for driving under the influence,” said Black.

No one on the bus was injured.

Renton police said the school bus had four on board, two adult students, the school bus driver, and a student aid.

According to the Renton School District, the students are part of a transition program for adults with special needs. They were coming from a special program at Renton Technical College at the time of the crash. The district staff on board the bus were transported to a hospital as a precaution, per district officials.

On top of possible a DUI charge, Renton Police said the sedan’s driver could also be charged with vehicular homicide.
