Passenger dies in crash along U.S. 12

FRANKLIN TWP. — A single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning along U.S. 12 claimed the life of a passenger.

Lenawee County sheriff's deputies responded at 4:09 a.m. Sunday to the area of U.S. 12 near Sharon Hollow Road in Franklin Township to a report of a serious injury crash involving a single vehicle, a news release from the sheriff's office said.

Deputies determined that the passenger vehicle was traveling westbound on U.S 12 and appeared to leave the roadway, strike a tree and go airborne. The vehicle crossed back over U.S. 12 and came to rest in the ditch on the other side of the road. There did not appear to be any evidence of braking.

The passenger, a 27-year-old man from Brooklyn, was found deceased at the scene, the release said. The driver, a 21-year-old man from Onsted, was located some time later and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

It was unknown if either person was wearing a seat belt or if alcohol was a factor, the release said. The name of the deceased passenger is being withheld until notification of the family and completion of the investigation.

The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by traffic investigators from the sheriff’s office and Adrian Police Department. Other agencies assisting were the Michigan State Police, Sand Lake Fire Department and Lenawee Community Ambulance.
