Past champion Patrick Reed among final commitments to American Express

Missing players like Phil Mickelson, Hudson Swafford may impact American Express, but will that hurt the event?

Former American Express champion and nine-time tour winner Patrick Reed is among the final players to commit to The American Express PGA Tour event in La Quinta next week.

Reed, ranked 25th in the latest Official World Golf Rankings, won The American Express in 2014, shooting 9-under 63 each of the first three days and then holding on for a two-shot victory. It was the second PGA Tour victory for Reed.

Friday was the final day for pros to commit to the La Quinta tournament. Only the winner of the Sony Open in Hawaii this weekend, if not already eligible, can commit to the event now.

Reed joins a field that includes 14 of the top 50 players in the rankings this week for the $7.6 million tournament. That field includes Jon Rahm, the reigning U.S. Open winner and current No. 1 player in the world, and Patrick Cantlay, ranked fourth in the world after three wins and the PGA Tour player of the year award winner for the 2020-21 season.

Others in the 156-player field include former British Open winner Francesco Molinari, 2021 PGA Tour rookie of the year Will Zalatoris, five-time tour winner Rickie Fowler and U.S. Ryder Cup members Tony Finau and Scottie Scheffler and 2021 WGC-FedEx St. Jude champion Abraham Ancer and Korean star Sungjae Im. Past major championship winners Jason Day and Justin Rose are among 13 major championship winners in the field, as is former world No. 1 Luke Donald, former U.S..Open winner Gary Woodland, World Golf Hall of Famer Davis Love III and rising star Matthew Wolff.

Rahm, Reed, Kim and Mickelson are among 14 past champions in the field next week. That list includes two-time winner Bill Haas (2010 and 2015 champion), Andrew Landry (2020), Adam Long (2019), Hudson Swafford (2017), Jason Dufner (2016), Brian Gay (2013), Mark Wilson (2012), Jhonattan Vegas (2011), Pat Perez (2009) and Charley Hoffman (2007).

Sponsor exemptions into the field include Jonathan Byrd, James Hart du Preez, Chan Kim, John Pak, Camillo Villegas and T.J. Vogel.

The tournament will be played Wednesday through Sunday at three desert courses, the Stadium and Nicklaus Tournament courses at PGA West and La Quinta Country Club. The 72-hole professional event begins Thursday.
