Pastor Gray renaming Relentless Church to LoveStory Church in Greenville. What to know

Longtime Relentless Church pastor John Gray is changing the name of his Greenville mega church to LoveStory Church.

In an announcement at the New Year's Eve service, the decision to change the name came after a recent two-month sabbatical from preaching and a breakthrough in dealing with unresolved childhood trauma, according to his wife, Aventer.

A video announcing the rebrand was posted on all the church's social media platforms shortly after Gray announced it to his congregation:

"Relentless was just the chapter, love is the story," Gray said. "We were relentless for five years, but now it's a love story."

"I had become bitter toward God," Gray told the Greenville News. "I was angry because I saw other people living in true freedom and peace while I languished in a religious system that needed my gift but had no answer for my unbearable pain.

"The men that abused me were the wrongs who did wrong, not God," Gray said in a statement. "What I've come to understand is that I am a recipient of a most lavish and undeserving love. That's the story that should be shared with the world."

The church building at 635 Haywood Road will undergo a full name change and building design by Easter Sunday on March 31.
