The College of Charleston men's basketball team will play the San Diego State Aztecs Thursday at 3:10 p.m. in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.
The team's head coach, Pat Kelsey, has Cincinnati ties.
Kelsey is a former Elder High School standout who also coached and played for the Xavier Musketeers. Last month, he agreed to a five-year contract extension with the College of Charleston, where he will be paid $1.1 million annually.

Where is Pat Kelsey from?
Kelsey grew up in Cincinnati. He and his basketball-loving family lived in Finneytown, and he attended Roger Bacon High School. For his senior year, Kelsey transferred to Elder High School, where he helped the Panthers basketball team win a Division I state title.
Where did Pat Kelsey play college basketball?
Kelsey played college basketball at the University of Wyoming. He later transferred to Xavier University in Cincinnati and played three seasons as a point guard from 1995-96 to 1997-98.
Who does Pat Kelsey coach for?
Kelsey was named head coach of the College of Charleston's men’s basketball team in 2021. In accepting the position he left a nine-season-tenure at Winthrop University, where he had been one of the winningest coaches in Big South Conference history.
Prior to Winthrop, Kelsey spent three years as an associate head coach at his alma mater, Xavier, under former head coach Chris Mack.
