The Indianapolis Colts drafted punter Pat McAfee in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft, and part of the gig would include McAfee holding for Adam Vinatieri's PATs and field goals.

So Vinatieri called McAfee, and was immediately thrown off. Vinatieri recalled the conversation on Monday night's version of the ManningCast with Peyton and Eli Manning.

"'You ready to go?'," Vinatieri told the Mannings. "And (McAfee) said, 'I've never held in my life before.' And I said, 'Really.'

"I probably threw up in my mouth, just a little bit."

Vinatieri booked McAfee on a flight and a lesson with Ken Walter, who had held for Vinatieri with the New England Patriots.

"I said, 'You're gonna go for a week and he's gonna teach you everything that he knows. Listen, pay attention, work your butt off,'" Vinatieri said.

"To Pat's credit, he's the hardest working dude. He's a funny guy, and he's a clown, but when it comes to work, he is a true professional."

Still, Vinatieri didn't understand McAfee's approach to football.

"I'd be all focused in, and he'd be MF-ing some dude on the other team. I'd be like, 'Dude, what are you doing? This guys gonna try to kill you or kill me,'" Vinatieri said. "But he always kept it light and fun, but he knew when to be serious about stuff.

"He was scary to me, being that he's never held before, but to his credit, he did everything right, busted his butt, and thank God he's a great athlete."

Vinatieri holds the Colts record with 1,515 points and the NFL mark with 2,673. He's eligible for Pro Football Hall of Fame consideration in 2024.

Vinatieri also recalled his one NFL pass, which went for a touchdown.
