Paterson man gets 12-year sentence for causing fatal overdose

An admitted drug dealer, and alleged member of Paterson's 230 Boys street gang, was sentenced to 12 years and 6 months in federal prison for causing a fatal overdose when he sold heroin and fentanyl in a dangerous combination, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Wyzier Peterson, 25, of Paterson, pleaded guilty in November to selling the deadly combination to an unnamed victim in 2019, according to a statement issued Wednesday.

However, by the time Peterson was indicted on that charge, he was already embroiled in a far more sweeping effort by the U.S. Justice Department to clamp down on the city's drug trade.

In October 2019, federal authorities arrested 17 alleged members of the 230 Boys, a reputed street gang said to have operated outside a small corner store named 230 Liquors in Paterson's 4th Ward.

Peterson was among a suspected rogue's gallery prosecutors associated with the syndicate and included in an expansive 29-count indictment unsealed in September 2020 by Craig Carpenito, who served as U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey at the time.

At least six defendants in that case pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges soon after their arrest.
