PATH OF SUCCESS: BHS pacers win Claremore varsity girls crown; Turner tops

Bartlesville, Dewey, Wesleyan Christian and Oklahoma Union runners fill up course

Bartlesville High School’s girls varsity cross country team was uncatchable and the junior varsity team was simply perfect during a blistering showing at last week’s Claremore meet.

The Bruins hustled to fourth place in the varsity boys’ run and the Bruin middle school squad romped to the team championship to spotlight some of Bartlesville’s other highlights.

Three other area schools — Dewey, Wesleyan Christian School and Oklahoma Union — also participated.

Following are brief summaries about each area team’s performance. At the bottom are full or partial results for all the squads.

BARTLESVILLE VARSITY GIRLS: Gentry Turner has been coming in October like a lion chasing breakfast. The Lady Bruins’ No. 1 runner set a blurry displaying, breaking the 19-minute barrier for the second time this week to win the championship with a time of 18:59.3. (Less than a week earlier she had set a personal best during the super competitive Chile Pepper run in Arkansas.) She won the Claremore run by more than 40 seconds. That second-place pacer was her Lady Bruin teammate Emily Lechuga (19:39.95). In fact, Bartlesville place five runners in the Top 10 — Katherine Manley (8th, 21:05.06), Lauren Shoesmith (9th, 21:06.14) and Reese Savage (10th, 21:09.53). Emma Perry and Rachael Landers rounded out the team. David Ayres is the Bartlesville cross country head coach for the boys and girls.

BARTLESVILLE VARSITY BOYS: Two top-20 finishes helped propel the Bruins to fourth place in the team standings. Tehi Chibitty churned to 12th place (17:52.82) and Tanner John tallied 19th (18:02.35). The next three quickest Bruins included Russell Miller (31st, 18:32.25), Kayden Reyes (49th, 19:07.31) and Reed Gorman (56th, 19:19.32). Jackson Boudreaux and Ashton Lindsay-Brothers came in sixth and seventh for Bartlesville.

DEWEY VARSITY BOYS: Scott Horton scooted to 36th place (18:44.96) to pace Dewey to 13th place. Daniel Jones came in next (72nd, 20:15.66), followed by Clayton Evans (77th, 20:26.45), Caleb Whitson (83rd, 20:43.43) and Cooper Eutsler (97th, 22:37.78).

DEWEY VARSITY GIRLS: Tania Salinas zipped to 12th place (13:59.26), followed by Izzy Perry (36th, 15:50.68).

OKLAHOMA UNION BOYS: The Cougars were led by Nicolas Jackson (50th, 19:08.35). Braden Green (24:18.15), James Bottoms (24:19.65), Jack Campos (24:45.07) placed next for the Cougars.

BARTLESVILLE JUNIOR VARSITY GIRLS: Perfection is a rare achievement in the jumble and tumble of human flaws in athletic competition. But, the Lady Bruins literally could not have done any better — they were flawless. That’s because the swept the top five spots (top eight spots, actually) to record the lowest team score possible in cross country — 15. For the unfamiliar, cross country team scoring is figured by adding the places of the team’s top five finishers — one point for a first-place finish, eight points for an eighth-place finish, 38 points for a 38th place finish, etc. In other words, like golf, the low score wins. If a team places its runners in the top five spots, the team score is 15 (one point for first, two points for second, three points for third, four points for fourth and five points for fifth). Even though a complete team is seven runners, only the places of the top five go toward the team total. To add clarity, there might be a difference between a runner’s place and team points, because some teams will have their sixth and seventh place runners finish in front of some of the top five runners from other teams. For accuracy purposes, the paper reports the actual place a runner finished and not the team points they received (a runner might finish 20th overall, but his or her team points is 18, because two sixth place finishers, or a sixth and seven-place placer from other schools came in ahead of them). That’s a long way around the block to give more details about Bartlesville’s unimpeachable, incredible showing — Maryann Alvey (1st, 20:43.79), Kaitlyn Taylor (2nd, 23:35.56), Olivia Ontiveros (3rd, 23:44.31), Hailey Taylor (4th, 24:17.01) and Kailey Malcom (5th, 24:20.0). Also finishing in the top 10 were Arin Bailey (6th), Kara Stose (7th) and Raina Jones (8th). More results appear at toward the bottom of the article.

BARTLESVILLE JUNIOR VARSITY BOYS: Jesse Espinal-Cruz stampeded to fourth place (19:11.23) to lead the Bruins to fourth place as a team. Cade Winter came in 10th (19:51.9). The other top five finishers for Bartlesville included: Ben Zilenski (17th, 20:13.24), Chris Laxson (20th, 20:23.07) and Nathan Beckloff (24th, 20:30.12).

DEWEY JUNIOR VARSITY BOYS: Tre Hicks put in some strong kicks to finish 50th (22:27.85), followed by Kooper Crawford (22:37.92), Lathe Griggs (23:30.92) and Karson Johnson (24:24.53).

WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN SCHOOL JUNIOR VARSITY BOYS: Leo Williams cruised to 14th (20:05.14) to lead the Mustangs, followed by Isaac Valenzuelaaramburo (22:31.6), Kaden Week (23:16.14) and Jarrett Jenson (23:53.32).

BARTLESVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS: The younger Lady Bruins stormed to second place, led by four finishers in the Top 15. They included Maci Alleman (6th, 13:22.45), Madilyn Malcom (12th, 13:48.1), Isabella Prentice (13th, 14:05.03) and Emma Kuntz (14th, 14:05.54). Karli Serratos summed up the team’s top five (17th, 14:11.06). Taylor Bradford and Eliza Miller rounded out the seven fastest Lady Bruins.

BARTLESVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS: The Bruins pieced together an amazing team score (31) to win the crown. Wesley Turner blitzed to the individual championship (11:31.62), followed by Jesus Gaytan-Lopez (4th, 11:47.26), DaVion Broch (6th, 11:58.23), Michael Taylor (8th, 12:00.96) and Preston Shoesmith (12th, 12:11.93). Sutton Huff and Lincoln Pulsifer crossed the line next for the Bruins.
