Patrick Mahomes never forgets a slight. He keeps bulletin-board material on hand, and he isn’t afraid to let you know about it.

Even if it comes from the NFL.

After winning Super Bowl LVIII 25-22 in overtime — an extra period featuring new rules that came into play late — Mahomes reminded those watching ESPN’s broadcast why those NFL rules got changed.

It was in fact the Chiefs, winners of the famed “13 seconds” game over the Bills, who forced the NFL’s hand with changing how playoff games would be decided.

The Chiefs won that game on the first drive of overtime, as Mahomes found Travis Kelce for the winning touchdown after Mahomes, Kelce and Tyreek Hill set up a game-tying drive in regulation with just 13 seconds of clock.

Josh Allen never touched the ball in overtime.

Outcry followed after the Chiefs won that game — despite it being awfully similar to a Chiefs loss a couple years prior against the New England Patriots — and so the NFL changed the rule. Both teams got to possess the ball in playoff overtime, even if the first team scored a touchdown.

Mahomes, speaking to ESPN’s Chris Berman and Booger McFarland, reminded the audience of that.

“I mean, we changed the rule,” Mahomes said. “So we can execute on them both ways.”

And then, he quipped, “I don’t know how they’re going to change it this time.”

Indeed, the Chiefs took advantage of the extra period, after an apparent coaching (or game-management) misstep from the 49ers.

After winning the coin toss, the 49ers chose to receive the ball, which made sense under the previous rules — a touchdown wins it — but not so much under the new ones.

After all, if you go second, you could always play for the win knowing what your opponent scored. The only conceivable advantage of going first would be if the game got to a third possession, with both teams tying, then you could drive for a sudden-death victory.

“Yeah, we were going to kick (off),” Mahomes said, had the Chiefs won the coin toss. “We got it. (The 49ers) let us know what they were going to do, so we could go for it on fourth down. We talk about those situations all the time.”

He’s not kidding — and they were certainly prepared, with Mahomes leading a touchdown drive that involved a fourth-down conversion along the way.

“It’s funny,” Mahomes said. “We joke about it, but at the same time, we talk about it like every week, especially in the playoffs. We have a guy come up and tell us all the different rules, so we weren’t panicked. We were ready to go, and that speaks to the coaches. They keep us prepared.”

Chimed in a nearby Kelce: “Best in the league, baby.”
