Patrick’s Pantry: How a kid is giving back on his 10th birthday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Patrick Zubiran has been coming to St. Vincent de Paul to help feed those in need since he was eight years old. Now, for his 10th birthday, he has a big goal.

That goal?

“To collect 500 canned food items,” said Zubiran.

The inspiration to do this comes from a very important person in his life.

“On Sundays, I come and help my dad,” said Zubiran. “Help him, like, organize the pantries, and I noticed that it was kind of dimpling, the one over there. So I asked my dad, ‘”‘Dad, where is the rest of the food to stack? And he’s all, ‘That’s all, there is no more.’ And then I go, ‘Hmm, what if I make my own pantry?'”

Patrick’s Pantry welcomes all types of food to deliver around the community. The food they distribute most is beans, rice, canned food and water for families.

Zubiran says his motivation comes directly from home, saying his dad helping out inspires him.

“I want to be just like him when I grow up,” said Zubiran.

Zubiran’s dad might be a familiar face — Oscar Zubiran is the Business and Center Coordinator at St. Vincent de Paul.

Zubiran grew to love the center so much, he spends most of his weekends there sorting the pantry, and even serving warm plates to those in need.

Now, Zubiran is following in his dad Oscar’s footsteps, and is dedicated to give back while continuing the family’s charitable legacy.
