Patriot wrestling off to a great start at Edgewood Invite
As the leaves of autumn fall from the trees and the brisk winds that usher in the holidays blow, high school wrestling season is upon us.
Owen Valley head coach Steven Spicer, the 2020-2021 Western Indiana Conference coach of the year, brings back a very talented team. The Patriots, loaded with strong contenders up and down the roster, are led by semi-state qualifiers, senior Jerry McBee at 182 pounds, junior Logan McGraw at 285 pounds, and junior Eli Hinshaw at 195 pounds.
The Patriots also welcome back regional qualifiers Branson Weaver at 126 pounds and Bryce Pardue Mills at 220 pounds.
Owen Valley opened up their 2021-2022 campaign at the Edgewood Invitational duals last week, coming away with a record of 4-1.
In the opening round, the Patriots took down the host Mustangs, 72-12 and went on to dismantle Terre Haute North, 54-21 and Seymour, 66-11, and Bloomington North, 69-11.
The Patriots only loss came to Floyd Central, ranked third in class 3A, a class higher than OV who is currently 2A. Despite a valiant effort, OV lost 45-36 to the Highlanders. The Patriots however, scored more points against Floyd Central than did all of their other opponents on the day, combined.
"A great team performance," OV head coach Steven Spicer said after the meet. "Some positioning things to improve on, but a fantastic first showing."
The Patriots had four wrestlers finish the day with five wins, including Kain Mobley (132), Branson Weaver (126), Logan McGraw (285) and Bryce Pardue-Mills (220).
Jerry McBee (182) also finished the day undefeated with a record of 4-0 while Eli Collier (106), Jackson Emery (113), Logan Cain (160) and Eli Hinshaw (195) all walked away with a 4-1 start to the season.
"The intensity was high all day long," Coach Spicer continued. "We are a dangerous team when everyone is wrestling at their best!"
Owen Valley will host the Cloverdale Clovers on Thursday, Dec. 2, beginning at 6 p.m.
