Patriots corral the Mustangs in Black & Blue Trophy win

It was a night of points for the Patriots and miscues for the Mustangs as Owen Valley defeated 57-7 Edgewood to retain the Black and Blue trophy.

The game started off with a flurry of turnovers, starting with a fumble by the Patriots. On the next play, Owen Valley intercepted a Mustang pass and on the first play from the line of scrimmage, Christian McDonald went for a long seven-point jaunt. That lengthy run was the beginning of a long night for the Mustangs and the team's fans.

By halftime, Edgewood had committed five turnovers and were scoreless. The Patriots had amassed 43 points on touchdowns by McDonald (3), Brayden Phillippe, Kyvan Bandy, and Seth Brewster and a 41-yard field goal and four extra points by Kyler Walker.

The Mustangs countered a bit in the second half, scoring after a Patriot interception that gave the team excellent field position. But that score would be the squad's only one of the game, 43-7. Edgewood went on to commit three more turnovers, one of which was ran back for a touchdown. A bit tighter defense and a running clock were helpful to the home team as the Patriots were only able to put up 14 points in the second half. Brewster scored off another Mustang turnover and Elijah Anderson ran the ball in for his first score of the season.

Despite the point differential, Owen Valley coach Rob Gibson was not satisfied with his team's play.

"I kind of said the same thing two weeks ago. It's hard to complain about a 57-7 win, but until we play the type of football I think we are capable of, I'm still not going to be satisfied," Gibson said post game. "I told our team at halftime, it's good that we're up like this, but we've still got a half of football to play... we still have to execute. I want to make sure our operation of football was extremely crisp and I don't think it was. We didn't have any big substitution issues, but I wanted to make sure that we substituted well. I wanted to make sure that we got to the special teams box on the sideline, we didn't have any substitution penalties.. anything like that. I wanted to make sure the game of football operated to the standard that we set and I thought, at times, it didn't. I want to make sure that we clean that up. We've got to play two back-to-back games here that will be considered the conference championship the next two weeks (Northview and Sullivan) so we've got some things we've got to clean up."

The Knights are coming off a 41-6 win over the West Vigo Vikings in week four. The defeated Terre Haute North 27-21 in week one, Greencastle in week two 39-7 and Sullivan in week three, 28-7.

Edgewood (1-3) will host South Putnam (3-1) in week five. The Eagles took down Cloverdale in the team's season-opener, 70-0; lost to Owen Valley in week two, 57-34; dismantled North Putnam in week three, 52-20; and defeated Greencastle in week four, 35-14.
